A Note From the Publisher/Editor About the History of SocialWorkJobBank.com
SocialWorkJobBank is a service of THE NEW SOCIAL WORKER®: The Magazine for Social Work Students and Recent Graduates, a publication I started in 1994. As a social worker who had experienced a varied career in direct practice as well as in writing and editing, and who had a strong interest in social work careers (I was always reading “Want Ads” even when I wasn’t looking for a job), I decided to start a magazine that would help other social workers with the issues they faced as they went out into the professional world.
THE NEW SOCIAL WORKER® grew from a small print publication to include a vibrant online community and resource. THE NEW SOCIAL WORKER® ONLINE, at www.socialworker.com, started in 1995. The site includes articles about social work, an online discussion forum, a free Social Work E-News newsletter, and more. It is an ongoing work-in-progress, and I always welcome feedback and ideas.
As THE NEW SOCIAL WORKER® ONLINE grew, employers began to contact me about posting their job listings, recognizing that the site’s audience provided a wealth of qualified, professional social work candidates for their agencies. So, we began our Job Listing page.
In 2002, we expanded this job listing to a searchable job and résumé database. In 2003, we teamed up with JobTarget.com to provide you, the social work job seeker and employer, with the most state-of-the-art job board features we could find, and to customize that job board experience to make it as relevant to social work as possible. In addition, we added a “Career Center” with articles and links to other social work resources.
I think the uniqueness of SocialWorkJobBank is that it is part of a larger picture, which is the original idea behind THE NEW SOCIAL WORKER®—to support social workers in their careers. It is geared specifically to professional social workers and has a user base of thousands of such qualified professionals. It is operated by a real person (me)—a social worker who understands social workers and their career issues—and that real person is always available to answer your questions and listen to your ideas and feedback.
I have personally reviewed many of the résumés of job seekers who use this site and have corresponded with many of these job seekers. I know that there is a wealth of professional social work talent out there waiting to find the perfect job match. And I hope that they will find it here at SocialWorkJobBank. It is a huge thrill to hear that someone has found a job here or that an employer has found the ideal employee through this site.
Our pool of job seekers consists of MSWs, BSWs, and other qualified social workers who are seeking positions in every location and in every field of social work. The jobs listed on the site have ranged from caseworker positions to international social work to dean of a school of social work.
If you have any questions about SocialWorkJobBank, or if you’d like to share your SocialWorkJobBank success story, please contact me using the “Contact” form on this site, or use the contact info at the bottom of the page.
I look forward to hearing from you.
